Styx-Man Of Miracles

Man of Miracles-1974 (B-)

Studio CD 10 songs
1974

1 Rock & Roll Feeling
2 Havin' a Ball
3 Golden Lark
4 A Song for Suzanne
5 A Man Like Me
6 Lies Bailey,
7 Evil Eyes
8 Southern Woman
9 Christopher, Mr. Christopher
10 Man of Miracles

Their 1974 release, starts off with the rocking Rock and Roll Feeling and ends with the metal title track Man of Miracles. And this CD contains some very good songs, even though they never got any air play, Lady from Styx 2 was starting to be picked up ath the time of this release .This CD contains other rockers besides the two mentioned above, Southern Woman the 3rd sung and written by JY, shows that he could carry a STYX CD. He also sings A Man Like Me, Havin' a Ball, and shares vocals with Dennis on Lies. Having written or, co-written about half the tracks on this outing, JY made what would be his best STYX CD. He would later be reduced to one to two songs a CD, as the Tommy and Dennis pair would take over the writing chores on later Cd's.Dennis made his presence know this time, on the last CD (SERPENT) he was almost unnoticed. But this time he showed his style, that would later develop into his superstar writing pattern. Here he as the songs Golden Lark, A Song for Suzanne, both good, the haunting Evil Eyes, the lackluster Christopher, Mr.Christopher. And if you were lucky you may have the CD with the hidden track Unfinished Song, which besides Lady is his best song up to this date. JC didn't sing on this outing, and he only co-wrote three songs. Rest of the band Chuck and John, show a growing connection in the playing together, the whole group appears to be coming together. only leave Havin' a Ball, which keeps repeating itself, is the weakest song this time, followed by DeYoung's Christoper song .Over all not a bad album.

Styx-Serpent Is Rising

Studio Cd 10 songs
1973

1 Witch Wolf
2 The Grove of Eglantine
3 Young Man
4 As Bad as This
5 Winner Take All
6 22 Years
7 Jonas Psalter
8 The Serpent Is Rising
9 Krakatoa
10 Hallelujah Chorus

I remember when I first got his album (CD), I put it on and cranked it up. I was totally blown away by the opening track, Witch Wolf, JY had created an awesome rocker. But things didn't awesome for long. The Grove of Eglantine, by Dennis falls flat, one of my least liked songs by Dennis. I do not like the way it is sang, arranged, I just don't care for it. But JY, again saves the CD with the third track, Young Man. This track has a meaning behind it, and can still be sung today as easily as when the Vietnam war was going on. And this song kicks butt. JC, enters the game with a good As Bad As This, but by the time the track is over, a non listed song pops up, Plexiglass Toilet. This has to be the worst Styx song in history. Its a embarrassment to listen to, when I play the CD now, I have to hit the skip button. It's hard to keep listening to the CD after hearing this song, most of the time, I'm able to move on to the next song. But since its a "hidden" song its tacked onto the end of As Bad As This, and you can't program your player to skip "Plexi"without skipping "As bad as.." The next song is Winner Takes All, a good message, but Jy voice is whiny, and the CD never really recovers with the following tracks. The CD really tries to rock, and at points it really does. Witch Wolf, and Young Man are two of JY's finest. Dennis writes three songs and sings vocals on two, one of witch is a duet with JC. As a concept CD, which it tries to be, it comes up very short with its dark message. Basically it is some songs (most of them poorly produced and written) with a very very thin theme in some of them.

Styx-Styx II

Studio Cd 8 songs
1973

1 You Need Love DeYoung 3:44
2 Lady DeYoung, Saadiq, Veasley 2:56
3 A Day Curulewski 8:19
4 You Better Ask Curulewski 3:54
5 Little Fugue in "G" Bach 1:17
6 Father O.S.A. DeYoung 7:08
7 Earl of Roseland DeYoung 4:39
8 I'm Gonna Make You Feel It DeYoung 2:23

After a lackluster start, Styx came back with their follow up CD, Styx 2. This time writing their own songs, and John C. singing on the two songs that he wrote, A Day, and You better ask. A Day is a good song, containing a very good instrumental in the middle. You Better Ask is one of the two weak songs on the CD, a song about VD and pregnancy and the problem it causes. But the star of this CD is Dennis. Writing five of the six songs, and handling vocals on three of them. Dennis started it all right here, with a song called Lady. Not a hit at first, but a couple years after the release of this CD, it would be a top ten hit, their first of many. Father O.S.A. one of the other songs that Dennis has lead vocals on is a prelude of songs to come for the group (Madame Blue, etc). JY isn't to be counted out, handling vocals on You Need Love and the rocker I'm Gonna Make You Feel It, which is a great closer for the CD. Styx showed life on this CD, long before anyone really knew them. Earl Of Roseland is my least liked song on the cd, Dennis' voice is grating.

Styx-Styx

Studio CD 6 songs
1972

1 Movement for the Common Man
2 Right Away
3 What Has Come Between Us
4 Best Thing
5 Quick Is the Beat of My Heart
6 After You Leave Me

The first cd by Styx is the most un Styx like of all the cds. 2 or 3 songs on the cd are written by the members of the band, the rest of the cd is covers. Not that the covers are bad, they just are not that good. Styx would not have a good covers cd till about 30 years later. My favorite cover song, which is my favorite song on the cd, is Quick Is The Beat Of My Heart. Best Thing is my favorite Styx written song. But I would not buy this cd if I were not a Styx fan, any of their best of cds from this era 2 of the 3 good songs on the cd. By the way, the cover show is from the 1980 re-releases, this not the original.

Ace Young-Ace Young

Studio Cd 11 songs
2008

1 Addicted
2 The Letter
3 A Hard Hand to Hold
4 You Redeem Me
5 Where Will You Go
6 Fast Life Bunetta,
7 Young Money
8 How You Gonna Spend Your Life
9 The Girl That Got Away
10 Dirty Mind
11 The Gift Child

I wasn't pulling for Ace on American Idol, not that he wasn't a good singer and all. But something about him I didn't like. He seemed to being going through the motions of the songs and never really letting go. Everything seemed to be right on key and he would smile at the right time, his good looks and personality were sterile. But Ace could sing.
So I wasn't surprise to find his debut cd more of the same. He is in fine voice, but never really sinks his teeth into the songs and give them life. The songs for the most part own him and not the other way around. The main reason I got this cd, was because the boy could sing, and on a few songs their is promise, The Letter, Addicted, Dirty Mind and the very good The Girl That Got Away. He should have gave more to rest of his cd like those four songs and it would have been a better cd, but those four songs still could have shine even more, if he would have gave more.

1 I Want It That Way
2 Everybody (Backstreet's Back)
3 As Long as You Love Me
4 Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely
5 Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)
6 All I Have to Give
7 Larger Than Life
8 I'll Never Break Your Heart
9 The Call
10 Shape of My Heart
11 The One
12 More Than That
13 Drowning

Not much of a Backstreet Boys fan. Heard their music alot, my daughter and foster daughter at the time use to wear their cds out. So I got to hear their cds a lot. But like a lot of kids, they only played waht was on the radio, so a lot of times I would just hear certain songs (over and over and over) and not hear the whole cd. As much as I came to despise the Boys, I can say they recorded some good songs. This greatest hits cd, is right for me, these were the songs that were on the radio all the time and the songs I always heard. Stand outs for me are I Want It That Way, As Long as You Love Me, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, & Quit Playing Games (With My Heart). But those were probably the bigger hits too.
I can take their music in small doses, and this is big enough.

Eagles-Live In Knoxville

Audience recorded bootleg concert (double cd) 30 songs
Recorded July 4th 2002

Sound -C- A fair sounding cd, lot of back ground noise, a couple parts record volume was too high causing mild distortion. Cd has a slight tin can effect to some of the songs.

Seven Bridges Road / Long Run / The New Kid In Town / Wasted Time / Wasted Time (reprise) / Peaceful Easy Feeling / Pretty Maids All In A Row / Love Will Keep Us Alive / Boys Of Summer / Take It To The Limit / Already Gone / In The City / One Of These Nights / Witchy Woman / Lyin Eyes / I Can't Tell You Why / Walk Away / Tequila Sunrise / Sunset Grill / You Belong To The City / Life's Been Good / Dirty Laundry / Funk # 48 / Heartache Tonight / Life In The Fast Lane / Hotel California / Rocky Mountain Way / All She Wants To Do Is Dance / Take It Easy / Desperado

The show startes out with Seven Bridges Road, and the crowd is so lound it drowns out the band. A very entergetic crowd, which seems to feed off of the band. Good song selection, would be one of my favorite Eagles show if recording was better

Not much of a 707 fan, only bought this for the Kevin Chalfant vocals, but found some pleasant surprises on the cd, I Could Be Good for You You're,All I Need, Mega Force, Heartbeat, Can't Hold Back, Magic, Dont' Say You Love Me. Rest of the cd is ok, could have used more songs from Megaforce and the Fourth Decade, but over all, not bad.

4 Love Me Right 5 The Fourth Decade
6 Don't Say You Love Me 7 One More Chance
8 A Sinful Woman 9 Angilee
10 Broke Outta Hell 11 Going Home

This Cd serves better than any cd by the band, other than Meagforce. But Megaforce suffered from poor production. So really this is my favorite cd by the band. Production is better than any other cd of theirs and the songs are not dated. Some stand out songs are Same Way Out, No More, Don't Say You Love Me. The songs don't rise to greatest, but they are not bad by any means. rest of the songs are ok.

Queen (with Paul Rodgers)- The Cosmos Rocks

2008
1 Cosmos Rockin' 2 Time to Shine 3 Still Burnin' 4 Small
5 Warboys 6 We Believe 7 Call Me 8 Voodoo 9 Some Things That Glitter 10 C-Lebrity 11 Through the Night 12 Say It's Not True
13 Surf's Up...School's Out!
14 Small Reprise

After Queen's live cd Return Of The Champions, I was ready for a cd of new music by this line up of May, Taylor, and Rodgers. After the first listen I had to put the cd up and come back to it later, a couple of months later. The cd came off more like a Paul Rodgers solo cd than a Queen bad Company mix. I was expecting a lot, maybe too much from this line up, but since I was never a Rodgers solo or Rodger's Bad company fan, and was even less of a Queen fan, I do not know why I expected a lot out of this. Maybe it was because the live cd was so good, both on the Queen songs and the Rodger's song.
Sadly other than C-lebrity there is not really anything good here, they seem lost between wanting to be someone other than Queen or Bad Company, and at times wanting to so much to be like their former selves. Even now as I listened to it today, three times (which is as much as I have listened to it as total in the past), I find myself wondering why? and what could or should have been.

Queen-Return Of The Champions

Live Studio CD (2 disks)
2005

1 Reaching Out 2 Tie Your Mother Down 3 I Want to Break Free Deacon
4 Fat Bottomed Girls 5 Wishing Well 6 Another One Bites the Dust 7 Crazy Little Thing Called Love 8 Say It's Not True 9 '39 10 Love of My Life

1 These Are the Days of Our Lives 2 Radio Ga Ga 3 Can't Get Enough
4 A Kind of Magic 5 I Want It All 6 Bohemian Rhapsody 7 The Show Must Go On 8 All Right Now 9 We Will Rock You 10 We Are the Champions
11 God Save the Queen

Never really been a Queen fan, wasn't a fan or all the radio hits either. Paul Rodger's Bad Company, did really care for them either. So why on earth did I by this double cd that had Paul replace the late Freddy Mercury on lead vocals? I remember why, I was heading home back to Biloxi after hurricane Katrina, and basically the handful of music I fled with 3 weeks earlier had been listened to and listened to. So I stopped at Walmart in Memphis and picked up a handful of cds, and this was one of them. I am glad I did.

One of the things I disliked about Mercury and Rodgers was the singing, not a fan of the voices. But Paul, does an awesome job here. He doesn't try to be Mercury and breathes a new slightly different life and meaning to the songs. All the Queen hits are here, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, and Another One Bites The Dust all keep true to original but rocks out even more. The Rodgers songs form his career also benefit from this union, Cant Get Enough, Wishing ell, and Feel Like Making Love shine bright. Not all songs from the two fair well, All Right Now, which I never liked, isn't helped here. Same goes for I'm In Love With My Car and '39. Hats off to the band for keeping Freddy in the back vocals for Bohemian Rhapsody.

Over all and excellent cd, and the crowd is loving every second of it, and the same goes for me.

2. (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay
3. Soul Provider (Single Version)
4. How Am I Supposed To Live Without You
5. How Can We Be Lovers
6. When I'm Back On My Feet Again

8. Time, Love And Tenderness (Single Version)
9. When A Man Loves A Woman
10. Missing You Now

12. Said I Loved You...But I Lied
13. Can I Touch You...There?
14. I Promise You
15. I Found Someone
16. A Love So Beautiful
17. This River
How do you judge Bolton? I judge him as a great singer with a soulful voice. The songs he sings are middle of the road AC material. His band is good. But as far as his music, he is a singles guy. If it was on the radio and a hit, I liked it. If it wasn't on the radio, it is ok at best. So I am not a big fan of his cds, they are ok, I tend to skip to the songs I know. Which makes this hits cd, a good buy. All the songs that were on the radio are here. This is one of the few cds by him I can sit down and listen to in one take. Even the new song on here, except for Can I Touch You...There, all have a familiar quality to them. But Can I Touch You... There sounds like he has ripped off his own song Said I Loved You...But I Lied, which is bad thing, since he lost a plagiarism case a few years back. At Least this time it is his own song. This is my favorite Bolton cd

Aerosmith-Pumpin At The Hammersmith

Aerosmith-Pumpin At The Hammersmith
Radio Broadcast-VG
Recorded at the Hammersmith on the 1889 Pump Tour

1) Intro 2) Rats In The Cellar 3) Same Old Song And Dance 4) Monkey On Your Back 5) Don't Get Mad Get Even 6) Permanent Vacation 7) Mama Kin 8) Hangman Jury 9) Dream On 10) Love In The Elevator 11)Dude Looks Like A Lady 12) Walk This Way

A very solid recording or Aerosmith. Both performance and sound (production) wise. The concert was recorded and edited for BBC radio. I saw this tour that the band did and there were more than 12 songs played. As you can see a pretty good song high-lite is left of the show. Don't Get Mad Get Even, is my favorite performance on this CD.
The CD has an announcer intro and on fade in/out for the commercial breaks (which have been edited out) the announcer can be heard is still heard. I use to have a lot more Aerosmith shows both CD and DVDs, but got rid of all but this, my favorite of the bunch.

The New Cover (One of The WORST covers ever)

Old Cover (the better cover)

1 Mega Force [From Mega Force]
2 Can't Hold Back
3 Get to You 3:34
4 Out of the Dark
5 Hell or High Water
6 We Will Last
7 Hello Girl
8 Write Again
9 No Better Feeling
10 Heartbeat

This is my lest favorite cd with Kevin Chalfant on it. The production really bites and the so does most of the song writing. Like Shooting Star, 707 as never really been a group I have really liked or followed. The copy I have is the 2006 bonus track re-issue. If memory serves me right, the original came out in or around 82. There are several problems with this cd that I do not like. One the bonus material is pretty bad. The productions sound like it was pulled right off the LP and not remastered, has a very hollow and shallow feel to it. The songs are lame and the music is just about as lame. Kevin singing is not that good either. Sounds like it was cut vocally in one weekend, with Kevin having a cold and sore throat .

Having said that there are a couple of bright spots that save this cd from doom. Namely Can't Hold back and Mega Force. This very very seldom seems the inside of any of my cd players.
C-

Well that was my old thoughts on the cd. When I recently got most of the 707 cds, I got the remasters of them. The production is better than on the orginal version of it. Kevin's voice, still not my favorite by him, is better. His voice seems richer as does the music, thus making for a better listen. There are actually a few songs that get repeated listens, Mega Force, We Will Last, No Better Feeling, and Can't Hold Back. Amazing what a remaster can do. This new release I have as a new cover and no bonus tracks (which were really a waste). The shorter cd works better. Still my least favorite cd with Kevin vocals. Plus the new cover bites big time!!

Journey-Next

Journey-Next
Studio CD
1977

1 Spaceman
2 People
3 I Would Find You
4 Here We Are
5 Hustler
6 Next
7 Nickel and Dime
8 Karma

Journey's 3rd CD Next, is my least favorite CD from the band. There is only one song that I like on this CD. That song is Nickle and Dime. And the reason I like Nickel and Dime is... Take a very close listen to it. Tom Sawyer mean anything to you? Rush took the idea of this song and made it into their best know song Tom Sawyer, from the MOVING PICTURES CD. Rest of the songs, no direction, no idea of what they should be doing. They step away a little from the direction they were going on the first two cds, and head for a more straight forward rock approach, but with out a strong vocalist to match Neal's axe work, it doesn't connect.

Journey-Look Into The Future

Journey-Look Into The Future
Studio CD

3 Anyway Rolie 4:12
4 She Makes Me (Feel Alright)
5 You're on Your Own
6 Look into the Future
7 Midnight Dreamer
8 I'm Gonna Leave You

The 2nd Journey CD is just a hair bit better than their first CD. They still have that progressive jazz rock feel to them. And like the first CD it's a lot of hit and miss. And again it is about 50% good/bad. Greg's vocals are better this time around, and Neal is the only guitarist too, that is how it should be anyway. Neal is the best axe men out their, in my opinion.
On A Saturday Night starts out the CD, and if anything was to be commercial off the pre-Perry cds, this is their best chance. One almost wants to sing along with this song. She Makes Me Feel Alright is another decent song as is Anyway. I'm Gonna Leave You is also a classic Journey song, that Perry fans have never heard of.
Production seems more level this time around, but still not much of an improvement over the last CD. Overall, you can walk away with some decent songs on this CD, and IMO the best of the pre Perry CDs

Journey-Journey

Journey-Journey
Studio CD
1975

1 Of a Lifetime
2 In the Morning Day
3 Kohoutek
4 To Play Some Music
5 Topaz
6 In My Lonely Feeling/Conversations
7 Mystery Mountain

Journey's first cd was sure different from what people think of Journey today. There was two guitarist Neal Schon and George Tickner (who was only on this one cd), there was no Steve "The Machine Gun" Smith on drums, it was Ansley Dunbar (for 4 cds). Also no Jonathan Cain who would help write the big sweeping ballads. Greg Rollie was on the keyboards and handling lead vocals, so that meant no Steve Perry. Journey was not the hit machine they would become known as.
On their first 3 cds without Perry they had this progressive, jazz type rock that at times worked pretty good for the band. On the first cd the hit and miss is very apparent.
Mystery Mountain and Of A Lifetime are two very good songs that show the good musicianship of the band. But of the seven songs on the release, only four of them have vocals. Kohoutek is the best of the instrumentals, the others are ok at best. This is the only Journey cd, if I am not mistaken to feature two guitarist, after this cd Schon handled all the guitars.
This is not a bad cd, but the jams on most of the songs at times seem a little too long. The production is not the best either, everything seems "low" in the mix . But like I said not bad.

Carmen-The Standard

Carmen-The Standard
Studio CD
1993

1 Who's in the House

3 Great God
4 Everybody Praise the Lord
5 The River
6 Marchin' and Movin'
7 Sundy School Rock
8 Holdin' On
9 Lord, I Love You
10 America Again

I have owned a couple different Carmen cds in the past, even though I like how he gets his message across about Jesus Christ, I am really not a fan of his or his music. That changed, at least for this one CD of his, The Standard. He seems to focus a little more on the music this time around, while still holding true to the meaning of his songs. The stories in the song are not as complex and make for a better listen. Carmen tries in hand in different musical directions this time too, to good results.
America Again is one of the best songs ever, IMO, about the decay of the American and Christian dream. The songs builds and builds on each verse of what is wrong in this country, until at the end you want to stand up shout with Carmen.
Other stand out songs are the catchy Who's In The House, Great God, and Sunday School Rock. Rest of the CD is pretty good too!

707's second CD, is more of the same as the first CD, even though it has more keys in it this time around, it does not sound as dated as the first CD. Millionaire has a cool guitar riff and solo in it. Strings Around Your Heart has a quirky beat to it that pulls off the song.
Other songs fall flat, which begs the question if Rockin Is Easy, why doesn't this song sound better, or rest of the CD? Just poor writing and lackluster performance.

7 Sweet Dreams
8 I Want to Give It All
9 Even the Nights Are Better

13 Taking the Chance
14 Come What May
15 Making Love Out of Nothing at All
16 I Can Wait Forever
17 Just as I Am
18 Lost in Love [Original ]

Not a big Air Supply fan, which is why I have only one CD of theirs. But this is a good CD to have of theirs. All of the big hits are here, Making Love Out of Nothing at All, All Out of Love, Here I Am and some of the lesser known songs I Can Wait Forever, Taking the Chance . But listening to all these songs at once, back to back, makes me realize why I do not have any other Cd's by the group. The songs lack punch, they have no testies. No matter how good the singing, how good the song, or how good the production, if the song doesn't grab you, forget it. Too much Come What May and not enough Making Love Out of Nothing at All. But still a good CD.

1 I Could Be Good for You
2 Let Me Live My Life
3 One Way Highway
4 Save Me
5 You Who Needs to Know
6 Slow Down
7 Feel This Way
8 Waste of Time
9 Whole Lot Better

Not much of a fan of this band or this cd. Got into them because Kevin Chalfant was lead singer on their Megaforce cd. I Could Be Good for You was a hit for the band, and I have to admit it is a catchy litte tune. It is a shame that rest of the cd isn't. Not to say it is bad, but it is not that good either. Looking back on the cd, gave it a listen twice over the past few days, it sounds very very dated. So for the most part I have to say the cd was a Waste of Time, i hate to Feel This Way about the cd, but I was looking for something a Whole Lot Better.

.38 Special-Wild Eyed Southern Boys

.38 Special-Wild Eyed Southern Boys
Studio CD
1981

1. Hold On Loosely
2. First Time Around
3. Wild-Eyed Southern Boys
4. Back Alley Sally
5. Fantasy Girl
6. Hittin' & Runnin'
7. Honky Tonk Dancer
8. Throw Out The Line
9. Bring It On

Wild Eyed Southern Boys, the new (at the time) .38 Special CD was built on same rock & roll Southern-based formula as their last CD, Rockin Into The Night. But this time there a little more punch to the music, and a lot better writing, making it their best CD. Hold On Loosely, Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, Fantasy Girl, Honky Tonk Dancer, & First Time Around are some of the best songs by the band, and are all here on this CD. To me the band never topped this CD for over all quality of songs, and production.

Many years ago when I first heard the song What's Up, I thought it was Ann Wilson of Heart singing in some side group that she hat created. Never made it past that song, after I found out it wasn't Heart related, but the song stuck with me for years. Finally got the CD a few weeks back, and must say, I have really missed out a good CD.
The CD has rocking funkiness to hit. A shame you never heard anything else from the group, after this CD. The group throws back to early 70's rock with a 90's twist.
Train starts the CD rolling and it continues through Superfly, What's Up and almost all the way through the CD.

Another good sounding boot. No sound issues, band is tight, and audience noise is good.
Nothing sticks out about the show itself.

10. The Last Night
11. One Step Closer
12. I Love This Town
Everyone was calling this a Country cd for the band, I don't see it or hear it. Sure that were hints of modern country, but the cd was closer to AC radio than any country station. But the bad thing about the cd was that nothing really stood out to me. There are some good songs and if memory serves me correct there were 2 songs that a good bit of radio air play, (You Want To) Make A Memory and Till We Ain't Strangers Anymore. Both are good songs, and both are far away from the hair metal days of the 80's which could be a good thing or bad. This cd just doesn't get the spins of the groups other cds.

This cd starts off good. The band sounds like they are having fun. But the sound starts playing out about halfway through the first cd. It is not bad, or really annoying. Just random clicks here and there. I was able to take most out. But cd 2, I have had no luck as of yet. It is so bad that by the last song on disk 2, I could not tell you what it is. Shame too, like I said it starts out good.
